Yanga FC coach Luc Eymael—formerly of Free State Stars and Black Leopards in South Africa top-flight league—has congratulated rivals Simba SC for retaining Tanzania Vodacom Mainland Premier League championship over the weekend.
“Let me take this chance to congratulate Simba for becoming champions. I know that they are new champions because Azam drew today [Saturday],” Eymael told the press in Tanzania.
Simba retained the championship for the third consecutive season with 79 points from 32 games, following a 0-0 draw with Tanzania Prisons at Sokoine Stadium in Mbeya on Sunday.
Earlier on Wednesday, the 21-time champions Simba defeated Mbeya City 2-1 on Wednesday. With six games to go for each team, second-placed Yanga (60 points from 32 games) and third-placed Azam (59 points from 32 games) cannot catch Simba.
Simba coach Sven Vandenbroeck hailed his charges for winning the championship.
“It was a long journey and mathematically we needed one point which we got and we are now shifting our focus to the FA Cup,” the Belgian told the club’s website.
The former Zambia mentor was referring to Wednesday’s quarter-final meeting with Azam FC at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
Simba took advantage of the misfortunes of Yanga who dropped two crucial points following a 2-2 draw with Namungo then a 3-2 win over Ndanda while Azam shared the spoils 1-1 with Biashara United.
The league in Tanzania resumed two weeks ago after a Covid-19 induced two-month break.
